ODD COUPLES WE NEVER EXPECTED TO SEE PART 3

MY, IT'S BEEN A WHILE.  Two years, in fact, since the last installment of this extremely infrequent little feature I introduced and then quickly forgot about.  Simply put, here I post photos of incongruous pairings of famous people.  For the previous two examples of odd couplery, click on the "Odd Couples" label at the bottom of this post.  But here we have a very unlikely photo from the golden age of Hollywood.  While the pairing of Basil Rathbone and Marlene Dietrich isn't that odd (they would appear in movies together), it's their appearance together in character from two different movies set in two different historical eras which delights.  We see here Basil Rathbone in character as Richard III from the film TOWER OF LONDON and Marlene Dietrich as her character Frenchy from DESTRY RIDES AGAIN; both films being shot simultaneously.  I first came across this pic in the new 50th anniversary issue of MIDNIGHT MARQUEE (congrats, Gary & Sue) where it is captioned with the very funny (and FJA-like) pun:

"MY KINGDOM FOR A WHORE!"

Perhaps I might be allowed my own little attempt:  "See what the boys in the throne room will have."  Or perhaps not.

BETTER LATE THAN SORRY.

Hectic time.  And consequently this penguin has been a little spaced -- as you can see from the photo.  I usually name the nominees post-Thanksgiving.  Well, this is technically post-Thanksgiving but it's usually a tad bit CLOSER to Thanksgiving than Christmas.  Beg the Congress's pardon.  However, now that we're here, let's get this shindig shundug.  Here are the nominees for the 2013 Penguin Awards.  As always, the winners will be announced (hopefully) sometime between Christmas and New Year's.

THANKSGIVING ON THE COVER OF THE SATURDAY EVENING POST

HAPPY THANKSGIVING 2013!  Nothing said Americana in the early to mid-20th century like "THE SATURDAY EVENING POST" and it always featured glorious cover art by the likes of Rockwell and Leyendecker.  Here is a sampling of early 20th century Thanksgiving.

MY TARDY TRIBUTE TO NICK CARDY

EARLY IN NOVEMBER WE LOST ONE OF THE COMIC BOOK ARTISTS WHO, TO ME, REPRESENTED THE LOOK OF SEVENTIES DC COMICS:  NICK CARDY.

He was never a superstar artist like Neal Adams et. al. but Cardy's artwork was instantly recognizable and much-loved by me and many other comic book kids who grew up seeing it.  The late 60's into the 1970s saw Nick Cardy at the height of his powers and he was very prolific during that time; cranking out superb covers as well as interior artwork for our favourite DC heroes.  Particularly associated with Aquaman and the Teen Titans, Cardy probably drew almost every character and/or book DC published during that era and drew some of its most iconic covers as well (some of which you will see below).  Cardy was particularly adept at the "new look" covers DC was producing in the late 60's utilizing his graphically-strong, pop art style as well as his later 70's output of more straight-ahead, modern superheroic action.  The artwork of Nick Cardy is an integral part of my childhood comic book memories and his covers were so good and so numerous that I had to cut out a WHOLE LOT of favourites or else this post would've gone on for ages!  However, I'd like to present now just a small portion of the great comic book art of the late Nick Cardy in the following cover gallery:
