ROLLIN' SHORTIES READATHON BOOKS IN PLAY

HERE IS THE SPOT WHERE I'LL POST MY PROGRESS ON THE ROLLIN' SHORTIES CHALLENGE.  As I said before, I'm cheating and reading "THE HERO WHO RETURNED".  Since the first book read was bespoke, I've done spun the wheel and rolled the die for the second story.  So here's what my progress will look like;  stories have not been read by me until they are marked as read.  Ya git me?

  1. "The Hero Who Returned" by Gerald W. Page from ISAAC ASIMOV'S MAGICAL WORLD OF FANTASY 4:  SPELLS / Read

  2. "The Shifting Growth" by Edgar Jepson & John Gawsworth from THE THIRD PAN BOOK OF HORROR STORIES / READ

  3. "Grisly Rites of Hitler's Monster Flesh Stripper" by Jim McDonald  from WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH edited by Robert Deis & Wyatt Doyle.  READ

  4. "The Choking Chalice" by Frank Gruber from IT'S RAINING MORE CORPSES IN CHINATOWN.  READ

  5. "Soapsuds" by J.E. Grinstead from WESTERN STORIES SELECTED BY GENE AUTRY.  READ
    .
  6. "The Naked & the Deadly" by Lawrence Block from THE NAKED AND THE DEADLY by Lawrence Block.  READ.
  7. "Hungarian Rhapsody" by Robert Bloch from PLEASANT DREAMS by Robert Bloch.   READ.
  8. "Bayamo's Night of Terror" by Don Hogan
from CUBA:  SUGAR, SEX AND SLAUGHTER   READ.
  9. "Strange Journey" by Robert Leslie Bellem
from THE SURGEON OF SOULS by Robert Leslie Bellem  READ.
  10. "Crucifixus etiam" by Walter M. Miller Jr.  from A CENTURY OF SCIENCE FICTION 1950-1959.   READ.
  11. "Coffins Are For Corpses" by Robert Silverberg from MONSTERS AND THINGS by Robert Silverberg.  READ.
  12. "My Sister is a Werewolf" by Jack Prelutsky from BEWARE by R.L. Stine.  READ.  But now, here's the controversy.  This is only a 1 page poem.  Who'da thunk R.L. Stine would throw a monkey toe into the whole shebang.  Now, do I leave it here and move on to the next story or. . . ONLY read stories so read the next following story in RL Stine's BEWARE???  UPDATE:  Well, the consensus (meaning Cheeks) is that if the die roll picked a poem, then a poem it shall be.  Moving on.

STORIES ON DECK

"The Man Who Liked Dogs" by Raymond Chandler from KILLER IN THE RAIN by Raymond Chandler.  Still To Be Read.

"The Glance" by Stefan Grabinski from THE DARK DOMAIN by Stefan Grabinski.  Still To Be Read.

"Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne from CLASSIC HORROR TALES from Canterbury Classics.  Still To Be Read.

"The Man From Alcatraz" by John K. Butler from AT THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT by John K. Butler.  Still To Be Read.

So I'm confused (I know, that happens easily) but when did this readathon start? And it looks like you're off like a heard of turtles because your tally has been at two for a little bit now. I'm not complaining or criticizing as with all these things ya do what ya do but I'm just not sure what's really happening. Now, my other question is does Penthouse Forum count and if so can I include every issues worth?

Plus I don't roll shorties any more I pack fatties. As in cones.

You silly, twisted boy. ROLLIN' SHORTIES starts now and continues for the rest of the year (as I believe I said in the post already but don't hold me to that). And no, I said I would post when I had read the stories -- which I haven't done yet. The first story was scheduled for the reasons also stated in the post and my spin of the wheel and roll of the die determined the second story I will read. Will read. Haven't read either on yet. Dat's why I haven't said in the post that I have readed them.

And either way, I'm pretty sure Penthouse Forums were collected in some paperback books back in the day so they wouldn't count for Rollin' Shorties but sure as yell would count for GarbAugust (which is coming up in . . . well . . . August).

I suspected that of you.

I know it doesn't take much but I'm still so confused with this list. Am I missing something or have you read one story so far? And then that's even a fraudulent one since it's not in the book listed. Or something like that. Like I said I'm 'fused!

Cerpts said...

Yes you are correct - I have read one story so far. And no you are not only incorrect but apparently incoherently insane when you refer to a fraudulent story not in the book listed. every story is in the book listed. You philistine!

I feel somewhat remiss. I should've talked to to the level of Maple Shade dwellers when explaining this. So yeah, I have a list of 50 short story collections to choose from. Then I put them all on the wheely-wheel of chance, spin it and the wheel picks one of those books. Then I roll my big honkin' die (the singular of dice for Maple Shaders) and that number tells me which story in the book to read i.e. if I roll a 6 I read the sixth story in that book. See, it's as easy as Chinese algebra.

Ohhhh that sounds fun but you said you were reading from a non approved book I thought? I dunno I might have been packing too many fatties.

Lawd have mercy!! Gene friggin' Autry. That's called gettin' shit done, son!

Cerpts said...

You know it, son!!!! And I just finished the SOAPSUDS story and it was actually great! Ole Gene can shurr pick 'em!

Cheeks DaBelly said...

Welp, Pardner, Ol' Gene could spin a yarn well enough to crochet seven of Me-Maw's quilts and have some left over so I'm sure if'in you asked him where you could find some good stories he'd be able to point you in the right direction.

OOOOHHHH I like them there ones you got on deck! Them's are some good shiznit!

Cerpts said...

OK here's the problem. MY SISTER IS A WEREWOLF is a 1 page poem. But cats what was rolled. Now, do I leave it at that or should I only read actual stories? If so I need to read the next story after that in Beware.

Holy shit I didn't realize this would be so controversial! You have gotten yourself in quite the pickle! I'd stop doing all of this and come over here for a frolic and shenanigans. 24 Hour Horror-A-Thon part 3 anyone???

Cerpts said...

Me neither. I try to live my life as a knucklehead should but I always seem to end up in a pickle. Of course, when pumpkins start to look like pickles, I will be OK. You haven't answered my question, you lunk. Yeah, I'm trying my durndest to frolic but am always prevented. And what? A 24 hour horror-a-thon part 3?!?!?!?!?! I can't even manage to frolic, how'm I gonna pull THAT off?????

Cheeks DaBelly said...

Do yourself a flavor flav favor and just go with the poem. Hey is it written by one of the countries leading poemist?

Cheeks DaBelly said...

OK so I went and did some more in depth investigating and I am absolutely positive counting the poem is fine. I mean here's the deal, did any of the other short story collections have a poem BEFORE the one you read? If it counts there it counts here. So carry on with your bad self. Oh, and don't worry about the 24 hour thingy there's no way I could pull that off now.

Cerpts said...

HAHAHAHAHA a 24 hour SLEEP-a-thon maybe. Yeah, I'm going with what youse said - no, no other book so far had a poem BUT I don't think that's neither here nor there . . . . well . . . . it's mostly there since it hasn't been HERE yet. Anyway, if the roll of the die picked a poem, then a poem it shall be. Besides, the spin of the wheel could pick RL Stine's BEWARE again and then I would be reading another story so brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrppppp. Yep, you're right. I'm moving on to the next one.
